The other day I had a conversation with myself about the Lagrange points and the asteroids and other planetary space debris landed on these issues – let me explain the concept of I think in this context – that is the case of binary asteroids.
Okay so if you are not familiar with what a Lagrange point, let me give you a brief explanation. A Lagrange point is a region of space where gravity component is neutral due to two different objects with both gravitational fields pulling together.
And now, a to create a planet and Sun Lagrange points, where gravity cancel each other. And we know, and binary asteroids have been observed, ie two asteroids together slowly rotate around each other. So, just as there are binary suns, planets, there are also binary asteroids.
This means that a Lagrange point between the two, a place where the gravity of each is neutral. This means we could probe a park in such a place and the asteroid would pass through the space for free, good, no propulsion would be needed, once you get there, that is. From that point, a small probe can easily travel the solar system and explore, while giving a wealth of data on asteroids.
It would make sense to send a manned mission such binary asteroid configuration, parking at the Lagrange point and send robotic probes and astronauts to each for gathering information and studying these space rocks? Indeed, my answer would be yes, does it actually a lot of sense. Maybe, maybe we bring this matter the next NEO (Near Earth Object) NASA conference. Consider this.
