Have you ever dreamed about flying? Well, ultralight can fly for you!

But before you go out and start flying ultralight, you must understand is a lightweight and what are the rules on them.

That's where FAR Part 103 comes in you see, is the FAR Part 103 Federal Aviation Regulations Part 103 and the portion that relates to vehicles Ultralight. Now I'm not going to list the rules exactly, but what I am trying to do is relate in a way that most people will understand.

What is an ultralight vehicle? According to FAR Part 103, an ultralight vehicle is a vehicle in the air by a single person. The rules go on to say that the goal of an ultralight vehicle solely for sport or recreation only. Also, the vehicle does not have an airworthiness for, domestic or foreign. This means that if you buy one of an ultralight vehicle manufacturer and the manufacturer has a certificate issued for the ultralight can not be operated under Part 103.

There are two major classes of ultralight vehicles. Powered and without engine. If the vehicle is passive, such as hang gliders, hot air balloons, etc. The regulations state that the maximum weight must 155 pounds or less. If on the other side of the vehicle is powered, the maximum empty weight of the vehicle is 254 pounds or less. This weight is not under the weight of the safety and float devices. These include parachutes designed to be used in case of an emergency. Full power speed and stall speed is regulated by this part. Full powerlevel flight must not exceed 55 knots calibrated airspeed. Switch stall speed must be less than 24 knots calibrated airspeed.

FAR Part 103 includes requirements for the inspection of the vehicle by the FAA administrator. Basically, the FAA has the right to inspect your vehicle to ensure that it complies with these regulations and that the pilot must sufficient proof of same provided if requested.

FAR Part 103 also addresses licensing requirements for operators and certification requirements. Basically there are none. What I mean is that as long as the vehicle meets the requirements above criteria, an ultralight vehicle is not necessary to satisfy any certification relating to airworthiness. However, as an operator or pilot of an ultralight is your responsibility to operate and maintain your craft safely. Remember, your life may depend on it.

With regard to the licensing requirements for the pilot, there are no requirements for an authorization or knowledge of aeronautics what so ever. That being said, I think only a fool would attempt to ultralight vehicle without any instruction from a certified flight instructor. There are no age or medical restrictions. But again, you are responsible for you and plane.

There are no requirements set forth in the FAR Part 103 into an aircraft tender or makings.

There are restrictions on where and when and how you can fly an ultralight. Some of the most important things are not work-as in a manner dangerous to other people or property, not allow things to drop the vehicle during flight. Here is a large-ultralights can only be used during daylight hours. Ultralight vehicles, the practice see and avoid aircraft and the right proceeds of way to other aircraft and always yield to disabled ultralights. There are certain restrictions on airspace ultralights, but they fall outside the scope of this article.

I hope this will give a better understanding of the rules of ultralight flying.
