Robots are staple fodder for science fiction since before Isaac Asimov and Arthur C. Clarke were on the cutting edge of the genre. But even though the gap between fantasy and reality is drastically reduced, the idea of relying on robots for something more than the most mundane tasks is obviously horrible for people. Maybe it's because we are exposed to too many sci-fi scenarios that gung-ho AI creatures intent on destroying the human species that we are careful to involve. Maybe it's because we do not like the idea of giving up of control. Regardless, robots are here and they are here to stay.
Japan leads the robotics race. It is so far ahead of any other country that the Japanese space agency wants using robots to colonize the moon.
Of more importance to the man and woman on the street, however, the nascent domestic robot market. According Narito Hosomi, Chairman Toyo Riki of the robotics company in Osaka, Japan, ordinary Japanese are beginning to show greater interest in robots. He attributes this to people with cartoon characters who believe reduces Hosomi the fear of robots grow.
As domestic robots are in production for more than a decade of exposure to the handy tools have a role in cultivating the comfort of the Japanese population also play with the machines.
In 2005, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries began mass producing a one meter long humanoid robot called Wakamaru. Wakamaru is designed to provide safe houses while the owners are gone, but is also capable of monitoring the condition of the sick household members and standing in as secretary, keeping appointments and provide timely reminders.
Just one month ago, Panasonic announced its brand new hair washing robot. It has two arms and 16 fingers nimble that the perfect shampoo, condition, massage and rinse offer. According to Panasonic, the machine is able to remember the preferences of each person who uses it, and apply any massage to the head of the person shape. As with many of the robots designed in Japan, the original intention was to help caregivers and the elderly and infirm who are unable to perform the tasks as on their own to manage.
In terms of good home appliances, robot vacuum cleaners are the most popular. Surprisingly, the most popular robotic vacuum cleaner Roomba mark is not Japanese but American. It is said that the reason is that the Japanese are more interested in robots company than those who clean up after them. This probably says something about the profound philosophies and lifestyles of the two nations, but this is neither the time nor the place to delve into the matter.
But disinterest does not mean inability. In 2007, Japan revealed a robot that not only cleans carpets, but also has a video camera, Wi-Fi, and in true Japanese style, apologizes themselves if it bothers you when it comes to its activities. It was made by Figla and was presented as part of the project Robot Laboratory in Osaka. The multi-tasking machine is also suitable for scrubbing and polishing floors.
Yeah, maybe it's not just a matter of preference for pet robots that makes Japanese engineers reluctant to take on vacuum cleaners. It is possible that they are because they simply are not challenging enough.
Take the robot Motoman Yaskawa Electric. It can assemble and cook when packing heavy articles; that makes it very handy around the house. University of Tokyo has a kitchen robot that helps with household tasks and can even pour a cup of tea while you relax with your feet up. To further sweeten the deal, it washes the cup when you're done. Waseda University, Tokyo also has his version of the domestic helper in Twendy-One, a humanoid robot is able to help you sit and stand – ideal for your childhood. It can also pick up and manipulate objects. Then there is the Toshiba ApriAttenda robot that can open doors and treat trays and drinks. It is also intended to help Japan silver generations. Finally, we have a shopping assistant robot developed by the Advanced Telecommunications Research Institute (ATR) in Kyoto. The supermarket greet customers and offer shopping suggestions and, if necessary, will collect all items on a customer's shopping list.
Europe has not entirely left out of the robotics race. Swiss company Serbot AG has developed and Gekko CleanAnt that robots that clean buildings. They can clean any building material and are able to work in howling storm perfect safety.
Robotic development continues to evolve the current rate, we all better start getting on our fears and start preparing for day when we welcome the handy little helpers in our homes. That or start building a bunker.
